Log Cabin Style Bedrooms

Updated: Mar 1, 2021

Interestingly enough, in our experience bedrooms tend to be either completely ignored or elaborately decorated to the hilt in most homes! It's easy to understand why on both counts. If your budget is limited, most people would prefer to start with the living room, dining room, kitchen and other areas where guests are likely to visit you. It's easy to just pull the door shut on the bedroom.

On the other hand, if the budget is tight, maybe the thought process says, lets start with our most small and intimate space and see how much we like it before we expand out to the bigger areas of the home.

On the flip side, a fully decorated bedroom done in the comfy style of a log cabin makes an excellent place to escape and relax!

Either way, here are some thoughts on creating a Log Cabin Style Bedroom. You're going to see that bedrooms really end up being a combination of many of the other ideas that we are talking about here. Really there aren't very many features that are really unique to the bedroom space in most homes. With that being said, there are several cabin style features that can be incorporated directly into a high end build or remodel if you are going that route. Some of these would include walk-in closets, fancy master bathrooms, sitting areas, entertainment centers, etc.

The Basics Of A Log Cabin Style Bedroom

Really there are three main areas that you are going to address in creating a Log Cabin Style Bedroom.

The Finishes In The Room Itself

By this we mean the functional parts of the empty room itself. We are talking about the paint, trim, flooring, lighting fixtures and things like tongue and groove pine finishes on the walls or ceilings.

Since we have different articles on each of these features individually, we won't go into great detail on any of them. The main point to mention here is to remember that these are the deepest level of changes that alter the basic feel and set the underlying tone for any Log Cabin Style setting.

If you are shooting for the outdoorsy cabin feel in your bedroom and are doing a serious remodel, these things are a great place to start. If you want to start at a foundational level, we would suggest a wainscot of horizontal T&G pine or milled log siding with some 1x4 pine for base, casing and chair rail trim with maybe a 1x6 header trim above the windows and doors. Give these a coat of stain, light color on the T&G, dark on the trim plus a couple of coats of a satin clear. Combine that with a very light tan color of wall paint. Then for your ceilings, you can go with either more T&G or a flat white paint to reflect lots of light.

Choose a neutral color for your carpet and add outdoor themed light fixtures and now you have created a very Log Cabin Style setting to start adding your furniture and decor to.

Obviously this is just one of our personal ideas. But it has worked very well many times in the past. There are lots of variations on this theme. But that will give your thinking processes a starting point.

The Furniture

Spend some time in our furniture article here. We've seen some really beautiful log bedroom sets that make the perfect compliment to the Log Cabin Style Feel in a bedroom. You can find beds of all sizes and styles, night stands, dressers, desks, entertainment centers, and even armoires all hand crafted from logs. You also have the choice of either natural logs and all of their inherent beauty or round milled logs in their construction.

As mentioned elsewhere, there are many different styles and colors of furniture that work well in a Log Cabin Style Home. Just be aware that your choices here will somewhat be dictated by the other features and decor of the room as well as your budget. You can go all out or take it slow and easy, one piece at a time as the budget allows.

The Decor

The decor is the simplest and least expensive way to begin the conversion process from a dull, boring, conventional bedroom style into your very own Log Cabin Style relaxation space.

You can start with such things as art work, curtains and valances, lamps, bedding or maybe even something like a deer mount for you hunters out there. All of these things can either be the beginning of the transition or the crowning jewel on top of the finished project.

If you are on a tight budget, start with these things. Add a few pieces at a time while you save up for a really nice log bedroom set. Either way you approach it, you will quickly be able to create your own little haven of peace right there in a quiet part of your home.

Last But Not Least

If budget and space constraints allow, don't forget the fireplace! bedrooms are a perfect place for a low BTU output gas fireplace insert and a beautiful fireplace surround. Mostly here we are talking about master bedrooms, not necessarily all the bedrooms in the house. But if the budget allows...

Have Fun And Enjoy!
